Materi tentang Menggunakan kata kerja dan kata depan terbilang sulit. Terutama bagi pemula yang mau jago bahasa Inggris.
Mungkin Anda sudah tahu contoh kata kerja. Yaitu kata yang kita pakai untuk menunjukkan suatu pekerjaan. Contohnya menolong, berkerja, menyelam dll.
Dan kata depan (preposition) adalah kateogri kata seperti for, with, at dll. Kalau dalam bahasa Indonesia contohnya di, kepada, dari dll.
Dalam bahasa Inggris ada kata kerja yang datang berbarengan dengan kata depan tertentu. Dan jika kita ganti kata depannya, maka maknya akan berbeda. mari kita lihat contoh kata work dengan beberpa kata depan.
- Work for – bekerja untuk. (biasanya untuk orang atau pemerintah)
- Work with – bekerja Bersama (untuk orang)
- Work in – bekerja pada suatu bidang atau daerah (work in engineering, in TV)
Kali ini kita mau lihat beberapa kata kerja yang biasanya diikuti oleh preposisi tertentu sebelum objek kata kerja.
Contoh:
- They’re waiting for a bus.
For adalah dependent preposition untuk ‘wait’
Kita dapat menggunakan preposisi lain dengan ‘wait’ – e.g. He waited at the bus stop – tetapi ‘for’ adalah ‘dependent preposition’.

Contoh:
He apologised for being late. You can also ‘apologise to someone’
- Apply
Contoh:
I applied for the job but I didn’t get it.
- Ask
Contoh:
How do you ask for a coffee in Polish?

Contoh:
She spent many years caring for her aged parents.
- Prepare
Contoh:
I can’t go out tonight because I have to prepare for my interview tomorrow.

- protect
Contoh:
This spray should protect you from mosquitoes.
- Recovere
Contoh:
Has he recovered from his illness yet?
- save
Contoh:
He won an award because he saved someone from drowning.
- Suffer
Contoh:
I suffer from hay fever.
3# Verb dengan preposisi ‘in’
- Believe
Contoh:
She believes in ghosts.
- Specialise
Contoh:
Our company specialises in computer software.
- succeed
Contoh:
You have to work hard if you want to succeed in life.

- approve
Contoh: I don’t approve of your language, young man.
- die
Contoh: Our dog died of old age.
- Smell
Contoh: This shampoo smells of bananas.
5# Verbs dengan ‘on’
- Base
Contoh: The film is based on the novel by Boris Pasternak.
- Concentrate
Contoh: If you make so much noise I can’t concentrate on my work.
- rely
Contoh: Come on! We’re relying on you!
- agree
Contoh: We don’t agree on anything but we’re good friends.
6# Verbs dengan ‘to’
- Introduce
Contoh: Can I introduce you to my wife?
- refer
Contoh: Please refer to the notes at the end for more information.
- respond
Contoh: Nobody responded to my complaint.
7# Verbs dengan ‘with’
- Agree
Contoh: I agree with everything you’ve said.
- Provide
Contoh: My secretary will provide you with more information if you need it.
Kesimpulan
